Through rushed showers, dry and humid seasons and sweaty workout sessions, the skin hiding underneath your hair is important to keep healthy.
Between managing skincare, haircuts, dying pesky roots, eyelashes and clean brows, having a healthy scalp is further down on the list of beauty needs. Often the skin is thought to stop after the forehead, out of sight, out of mind.
Depending on your individual body needs, your scalp may be experiencing dryness, itchiness, extra oil, or even dandruff that could be resolved with a care routine.
Care Tip #1: Exfoliation & Circulation
To boost the cell turnover in the skin and reduce flakes, it’s important to exfoliate the skin on your head on a regular basis. A strong scrub on your head can remove excess product and dead skin buildup.
In addition to scrubbing, at Canvas Salon, we start every hair treatment with a massage and choice of lavender or peppermint essential oils to increase the blood circulation. Smooth circular motions revive oxygen and nutrient to stimulate healthy hair growth.
Care Tip #2: Washing the Scalp
The right system of shampoo and conditioner can work wonders for your scalp health. Different seasons also highlight different needs. We recommend washing your hair 3-5 times a week to avoid stripping healthy oils but also cleanse the scalp. Use lukewarm water to achieve ideal results and avoid frizz.
If you suffer from dry skin on the scalp, reach for a shampoo and condition formulated with moisturization, like the new Aveda Nutriplenish Line. When washing the hair, gently massage the shampoo into the hair and rinse well. If your hair tends to get on the oily side, the Aveda Sap Moss conditioner provides hydration without weighing the hair down.
Care Tip #3: Scalp Care Products
Oils in the scalp are necessary for moisture and health, washing too hard or too often may strip the hair of healthy oils. Adding a hair oil, like the Dry Remedy dry moisturizing oil, instantly moisturizes dryness and transforms brittle hair.
Second-day hair is often cured with a dry shampoo, which can often lead to build-up. We recommend an alternative to gently revive the skin, the Rinseless Refresh micellar hair & scalp refresher instantly refreshes hair and texture while taming frizz.
Care Tip #4: Protecting Your Scalp
Just like the skin on your body, it’s important to protect the skin on your scalp from the sun year-round. Your scalp can get sunburnt like anywhere else. Depending on the amount of time in the sun, it’s best practice to wear a hairstyle without a part to protect the skin. You can also wear a hat to protect your scalp skin!
For minimal damage and dryness from UV rays, Aveda also carries a Sun Care protective hair veil to decrease sun exposure to the hair.
Keeping a balance of the elements and products treating your scalp is important for the overall health of your head and hair. Regular haircuts are important to maintain hair strength.
